The publication acts as an introduction to seven key technologies by explaining terminologies, how they are applied in the cultural context, and offering some key considerations. It is intended to interrogate the popular conception of technology as a ‘neutral tool’ and instead to examine its underlying assumptions and consider its moral and ethical implications.

The Primer is created by the Muse-Tech Working Group, a collective of professionals from a cross-section of museums on the island of Ireland. The group was supported by the Irish Museums Association (IMA) and the Irish Museum of Modern Art (MMMA) and explored the social and ethical implications of emerging technologies such as AI, VR, blockchain and the metaverse, and their applications in a cultural context.
